Clothing
the big question: what to wear?
Keep it simple: While you should certainly pick clothes that you like, remember that the center of attention in the portrait should be you, not your clothes. Select a variety of outfits in solid tones and muted colors - they generally photograph best. Avoid busy, distracting patterns, stripes, and loud prints which detract from your face.
Indoors and Outdoors: Dress from head to toe. Don't forget matching socks, a belt for the pants and accessories and jewelry for each outfit, if appropriate. Bring a variety of clothing: traditional, contemporary, or athletic.
Clothing with logos: Should generally be avoided except for athletic poses.
Outdoor Portraits: Outdoor portraits should be casual and so should your outfits. The best colors for outdoors are blues and earth tones, however you should not feel limited to those colors. Generally, whites and reds do not work well outdoors.
Deciding what clothes to bring: If you can't decide, bring more outfits and we will help you choose the most flattering ones.
Black & White Portraits: Clothing must be black and/or white - and preferably simple in style.
Undergarments: Be careful of what might show through blouses, etc. when photographed. Plan your clothing choices carefully. Retakes will not be honored due to visible undergarments.
hair, shaving, make-up & glasses You should arrive at the studio with hair and make-up complete except for minor touch-ups. Plan to wear your hair in a style that you are comfortable with. Avoid drastic new hairstyles just before your session. If you wear glasses regularly, you will want to wear them for your portrait. Guys: be sure to shave 2-3 hours before your session. Retouching cannot take care of the five o'clock shadow. |
